It didn't quite got to plan, with a fall on the ascent of Rackham Hill, luckily it was a slow fall, but i knocked my left knee rather badly and that was the end of the day. So we covered 76 kilometres in 6 hours and 33 minutes of ascents and descents. I have to say the bike performed brilliantly and coped with the steep chalky descents with no issues. As always there seemed to be a group of riders at the bottom of every steep descent having to fix punctures that the sharp flints had inflicted upon their tyres. The Tyre
selection I made worked really well on the dry chalky stretches of the route, but didn't seem to enjoy the few muddy parts and proved to be a little sketchy, luckily there where no major descents that had any mud/green chalk to contend with. (Front Tyre - Vee Rubber Mission 2.4 and Rear Tyre - Geax Aka 2.2). It was a gloriously sunny day with a little breeze not quite what the day's effort would have required. One nasty aftermath of the day was Hogweed Rash across the knuckles on both hands, rather stupidly because of the weather I had removed my cycling gloves after about 30 kilometres, In parts the South Downs Way becomes a rather over grown single track and so with the passage of such a large number of riders the foliage on either side had been broken and I must of come into contact with the Hogweed sap as I cycled through these sections. A lesson learnt.

It's that time again, I will be entering the British Heart Foundations South Downs Way 2016 event and will be cycling from Winchester to Eastbourne - 100 miles and over 10000 feet of ascent along the ups and downs that make up the route. You can donate via text or the Just Giving Website: |
