This mornings ride was out to the Chutes and back on the quiet country lanes which are a feature of North East Hampshire. 29.5 km in one hour and twenty five minutes. The high light of the ride was the profusion of wet leaves and mud on all the country lanes and how well the Land Cruiser tyres dealt with them. The Mango Point AR felt very composed on the climbs and descents.

The Longer stem arrived today - 90mm long with 7 degree rise so that fitted and that is that for the current build of the Point AR.
A proper crisp autumnal morning with icy patches on the country lanes, so out to Stockbridge up and down the Longstock road, then back via the Test Way. I was very impressed with the Schwalbe Land cruiser tires on the muddy Test Way - felt very assured considering the drop in size of tires we have been using on the Cube 29er. So completed 25km in One hour 20 minutes
So first ride on the Mango Point AR, not far just need to shake down any issues with the build. The Saddle position was too forward so that was moved back and up. The stem as we knew is too short, but a 90mm long replacement is on it's way. The brakes will need bedding in, but in general i was happy with how the bike felt. Not use to such narrow tyres after riding mountains bikes for the last few years. It did accelerate much quicker than the the 29er, which is not such a great surprise will have to play with the tyre pressures to help take some of the road noise out which we are not use to.
So installed a Vavert 350mm long mirco adjust head seatpost along with a Specialized Henge saddle. All that remains is to replace the stem for something a little longer and the application of helitape in the usual cable rub spots.
So we are going for a very unfashionable 3x10 gear setup. The crank set is a Shimano SLX triple 40x30x22T from the Cube Sting. I ordered new front and rear derailleurs, shifters and a Shimano Hollowtech II bottom bracket. Pre-cut Shimano gear cables help make for a tidy finish to the build.
Brake/Shift Levers: Shimano SLX M660 3x10 Speed Trigger Shifter Set Front Derailleur: Shimano Deore M611-B Conventional 3x10 Front Mech Rear Derailleur: Shimano Deore M610 10 Speed Rear Mech It all went together with no issues, indexing the new derailleurs took up most of the time and hopefully are pretty close, the initial shake down ride will no doubt highlight an issues with the shifting. So the only thing left now is a seat post and a longer stem to be obtained for the build to be complete. Fitted the Jones H bars and a Gap Stem which is a little short and will need to be replaced, but will do while the bike is being assembled. Also swapped out the headset top cap with a FSA one i had in the bits box. The Disc Brakes went onto the Mango Point AR frame without any real issue. As the wheel set which i am using for this build comes with 180mm rotors, I obtained a pair of Shimano Post adaptors to fit to the fork and rear frame. The fork disc brake caliper was an easy fit, the rear required a little adjustment of the shims to get the rotor in the centre of the Brake Caliper but once this was sorted the wheels rotated freely and braking as smooth.. So the frame has been bought we just need to get the rest of the bits and pieces ordered. Going to try and stay with the orange and black theme. So thus far have ordered:
Wheelset and Crankset will be borrowed from the Cube FS until we can find suitable replacements. The Jones H-Loop handlebars are also going to be used on the new frame. |
